Codis Expands Spray Drying Capability Through Catalent Facility Acquisition
The move to acquire Catalent’s Nottingham facility strengthens Codis’ integrated CDMO model, linking formulation, spray drying, and commercial-scale production within a single supply chain.
Global CDMO, Codis, has agreed to acquire Catalent Pharma Solutions’ Nottingham, UK facility in a move that will add oral solid dose development and small-scale commercial manufacturing to its capabilities. Already specializing in spray drying, amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs), and advanced particle engineering solutions, the acquisition will make Codis one of Europe’s leading providers of end-to-end spray drying solutions (1).
The acquisition — expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions — will incorporate the Nottingham site's two decades of expertise in formulation development, clinical supply, and development-scale spray drying into Codis’ repertoire. Additionally, Codis will gain further support through the Nottingham facility’s highly experienced team, strengthening its integrated service model.
Catalent’s Nottingham facility is strategically aligned with Codis’ Haverhill, UK operations, which have been undergoing expansion since March 2026 with the installation of a GEA Pharma-SD PSD-4 solvent-capable spray dryer (2). That investment represents a major step forward for commercial-scale ASD manufacturing, with the new unit expected to support larger batch sizes and expanded throughput once operational.
Codis has specified that the addition of Nottingham will complement Haverhill by creating a more complete pathway from early development through clinical supply, commercial intermediates, and final oral dose forms. Furthermore, the expanded services will allow customers to move from formulation work to scale-up and commercial manufacturing within a more unified supply chain, reducing handoffs between providers (1).
“This strategic acquisition will further establish Codis as a leading European provider of comprehensive spray dry solutions,” said Nicolas Fortin, CEO of Codis, in a company press release (1). “The close proximity of our Nottingham and Haverhill sites creates a unique advantage. Codis can now offer access to the best scientific expertise with a strong, integrated manufacturing capability within a single organization and quality system.”
“One of the greatest development risks remains the transfer from formulation to commercial-scale manufacturing,” Fortin continued, in the press release (1). “By bringing formulation development and GMP manufacturing together, we provide the fastest, lowest-risk path to unlocking a molecule’s full potential.”
By adding commercial-scale PSD-4 capacity in Haverhill and OSD expertise in Nottingham, Codis is targeting a larger share of that market while strengthening its position as a specialist CDMO for complex formulations. The company has framed both moves as part of a broader push to scale its UK-based manufacturing capability and support the next generation of bioavailability-enhancing medicines.
