Long-term value creation in bio/pharma now hinges on embedding environmental targets into early-phase development, according to Russell Miller from Enzene.

To learn more about how companies are aligning environmental targets with long-term operational resilience, The Pharma Navigator chats with Russell Miller, SVP, Global Sales and Marketing, Enzene.

Critical Business Driver

TPN: In your view, what is the most significant business driver currently pushing bio/pharma companies to embed environmental targets directly into their drug development strategies?

Miller: The main driver is the need to maintain operational resilience, while keeping up with evolving regulatory expectations. Bio/pharma companies have to ensure their development and manufacturing processes run without disruption, and sustainability is increasingly a part of that.

Environmental compliance and climate considerations are no longer optional; they directly affect how smoothly companies can operate and whether they remain aligned with regulations. Embedding environmental targets is therefore about safeguarding long-term business continuity while also supporting overall value creation.

Targeting Efficiency in Early R&D

TPN: Much of the focus on sustainability lands on commercial manufacturing, but the environmental footprint begins in the lab. What are the most effective strategies for reducing energy and waste intensity during the early-stage drug discovery and process development phases?

Miller: At Enzene, we are driven by a central premise that meaningful reduction in environmental impact begins during process development and R&D, not only at commercial scale. The earlier we build in efficiency, the more it carries through the rest of the lifecycle. In practice, this means focusing early on resource efficient, scalable processes, adopting fully-connected continuous manufacturing approaches where possible, and reducing facility footprint and cleaning requirements.

Our EnzeneX platform, with inbuilt Fully Connected Continuous Manufacturing (FCCM) technology, is a key enabler here. It supports lower energy consumption and water use, reduces cleaning cycles, and helps cut overall waste through process intensification and optimization.

Overcoming Green Solvent Barriers

TPN: Solvent waste remains a primary environmental concern in drug manufacturing: What shifts are you seeing in the adoption of biocatalysis or ‘green’ solvents, and what are the technical barriers to implementing these at a commercial scale?

Miller: We are seeing a clear shift toward the adoption of greener solvents through the partial replacement of hazardous solvents with biomass-derived alternatives. One example is the use of gamma-valerolactone (GVL), a naturally occurring compound, instead of traditional solvents like dimethylformamide (DMF) or ether in peptide synthesis to significantly reduce solvent use while still maintaining pharmacopeial compliance and scalability.

That said, there are still some physical barriers to full adoption of green solvents at commercial scale. The main ones include cost efficiency, scalability constraints, and the need for further solvent recovery and recycling solutions.
