Sanner Launches Enhanced Packaging for Tablets and Capsules

The company’s redesigned oral solid dose packaging has been optimized to meet the rising demand for safer, more user-friendly pharmaceutical packaging.

German healthcare packaging manufacturer Sanner has launched a newly optimized version of its TabTec CR packaging, targeting oral solid dose (OSD) manufacturers. The new packaging addresses three critical challenges for packaging manufacturers: ensuring child safety, integrated moisture protection, and streamlining overall line efficiency to meet the growing demand for packaging that supports both compliance and convenience (1).

At the core of the updated TabTec CR is a patented, certified child-resistant push and flip opening mechanism to prevent accidental access by children. Additionally, the new packaging features an integrated desiccant chamber built directly into the base of the container, allowing manufacturers to choose between base configurations filled with different desiccants that can be used interchangeably within the same primary container.

“The integrated desiccant chamber in its base sets TabTec CR apart from many alternative solutions while offering a high degree of flexibility,” said Chris Gilmor, VP Sales at Sanner of America, in a company press release about the launch of the new packaging (1).

The packaging is fully compatible with existing bottle filling and packaging lines, allowing manufacturers to integrate it into existing operations without requiring additional equipment. Furthermore, the outer surface can be customized with brand-specific colors and various options for labeling and secondary point-of-sale packaging to give over-the-counter products added shelf appeal.

“[The product features] make TabTec CR an attractive option for a large portfolio of prescription, over-the-counter, and nutritional supplement products that require desiccants to ensure product shelf life, with the convenience and ease of use for on-the-go administration,” added Gilmor, in the press release (1).

Sanner’s updated packaging enters the market amid surging demand for patient-centric pharmaceutical packaging, particularly in segments focused on chronic care, aging populations, and preventive health (2). As more patients take an active role in managing their health outside traditional care environments, the expectations around packaging have evolved from protection and compliance toward usability, trust, and brand experience.

According to a 2024 report by MarketsandMarkets, the global pharmaceutical packaging market is projected to grow from USD 147.9 billion in 2023 to USD 269.9 billion by 2028, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5% (3). Growth drivers include rising demand for biologics and personalized medicine, regulatory mandates around child-resistance and tamper-evidence, and innovations in moisture-sensitive formulations requiring high-performance barriers (3,4).

In parallel, a recent white paper from Röchling Medical highlights how many nations are experiencing a significant demographic shift, with the over-60 population soon outweighing younger age groups (5). This aging population is at a greater risk of chronic diseases and often faces challenges with medication adherence, necessitating packaging solutions that are easier to handle and understand.
