Enzene Launches NeX to Support Local Continuous Biomanufacturing

The new partnership model combines Enzene’s continuous manufacturing platform with facility design, technology transfer, and operational support to help regions build cost-efficient biologics production capacity.

Enzene, a global CDMO supporting biopharmaceutical companies from discovery and development through to commercial supply, has announced the launch of its end-to-end partnership model, NeX. The new partnership model has been designed to help governments, institutions, and biopharmaceutical organizations establish local biomanufacturing capabilities without the prohibitive capital burden associated with conventional fed-batch facilities (1).

The NeX program includes build out and launch coordination while also offering support for facility design and build-out, technology transfer, and intellectual property  (IP) licensing for EnzeneX — a commercially validated platform using Fully-Connected Continuous Manufacturing (FCCM). Additionally, the program can support workforce development through Enzene’s SparX structured training curriculum, as well as ongoing operational support during start-up and commercialization. 

“A conventional biologics plant often requires between USD 300 million and USD 400 million to build,” said Himanshu Gadgil, Ph.D., CEO of Enzene, in a company press release (1). “With our fully-connected continuous manufacturing platform, the same output can be achieved for USD 60–80 million. The efficiency comes from a compact, integrated system architecture rather than the scale-intensive layouts of fed-batch facilities, allowing for long-term cost advantage and high product yields for locally manufactured biomedicines.”

The intention of the new partnership model is to help regions accelerate the development of local biopharmaceutical capabilities, build domestic scientific expertise, and establish more resilient, risk-mitigated supply chains. Furthermore, if required, participating organizations may also gain access to selected products from Enzene’s biosimilar portfolio for manufacture in their regions.

“We are already engaged in discussions with multiple governments and cooperations all around the world and are looking forward to helping deliver affordable medicines to patients worldwide,” added Gadgil in the press release (1).

The company estimates that facilities established through the program could achieve validation and commercial readiness in less than three years.
