Moonwalk Biosciences Closes Oversubscribed Series B Financing Round

The company has managed to raise USD 70 million, which it will use to progress its lead candidate into first-in-human clinical trials and broaden its pipeline of siRNA medicines.

Biotechnology company focused on developing first-in-class adipose-targeted RNA interference (RNAi) medicines for obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, Moonwalk Biosciences, has closed an oversubscribed Series B financing round. Led by Alpha Wave and YK Bioventures, with participation from Eli Lilly and Company, Gaorong Ventures, and existing investors — ARCH Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Future Ventures — the financing round raised USD 70 million (1).

The monies raised will be used by the biotech to advance its lead obesity candidate, MW101, into first-in-human clinical studies towards the latter end of 2027. Additionally, the funds will help the company to expand its pipeline of tissue-targeted small interfering RNA (siRNA) medicines and further progress its proprietary discovery platform (1).

“Obesity places an extraordinary physical and emotional burden on millions of people,” said Alex Aravanis, M.D., Ph.D., CEO & Co-Founder, Moonwalk Biosciences, in a company press release (1). “This financing brings us closer to developing a new generation of adipose-targeted medicines designed to improve outcomes for people living with obesity and related cardiometabolic diseases.”

“Obesity is one of the most significant global health challenges, and Moonwalk is pursuing a fundamentally different approach to treating it,” added Rick Gerson, co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Alpha Wave Global, in the press release (1). “By targeting adipose tissue directly, Moonwalk may redefine how obesity is treated by delivering therapies with the potential for durable efficacy, lean muscle preservation and infrequent dosing.”

“What stood out to us about Moonwalk is the depth of the science behind the platform and the strength of the preclinical evidence generated to date,” commented Chris Dimitropoulos, Managing Director, Life Sciences Investments of Alpha Wave Global, in the press release (1). “By combining adipose-selective RNAi delivery with human genetics, epigenomics, and multi-omics discovery, the Moonwalk team has devised a highly precise way to modulate adipose biology.”

The biotech has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled discovery platform that integrates human genetics, epigenomics, and multi-omics to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets in adipose tissue. Through analysis of adipose samples from health, overweight, and obese individuals, as well as different types of adipose tissues, the company has been able to identify disease-driving biological pathways that might have the potential to enable differentiated treatments for obesity and metabolic disease (2).
